Background: Endoscopic placement of biliary stents is a palliative therapeutic option for obstructive jaundice in advanced stages of biliopancreatic tumors. The objective of the study was to establish the effectiveness of this type of management. Methodology: A case-control study was carried out that included, without randomization, 143 patients with bilio-pancreatic tumors with obstructive jaundice in whom endoprostheses with ERCP were placed in a third-level complexity specialty hospital. Results: 15.8% complications were reported. Total bilirubin levels decreased after stent placement (2.199 ± 0.730 vs. 1,500 ± 0.736; p 0.000). The level of quality of life measured with ECOG also improved (36.39 vs 24.64; p 0.000) Conclusions: The placement of endoprostheses in the bile duct as palliative treatment of obstructive jaundice due to bilio-pancreatic tumor. More studies are required to indicate it as the first choice.
