Abstract

This study assesses adherence to Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) among young HIV patients at the IESS "Teodoro Maldonado Carbo" Hospital. Given the transformation of HIV into a manageable chronic disease due to HAART, adherence to the therapeutic regimen emerges as a critical factor for its effectiveness. Materials and Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive design was employed, incorporating a sample of 130 patients aged 20 to 25, randomly selected from a population of 190. Adherence to treatment was assessed using the Simplified Medication Adherence Questionnaire (SMAQ), and additional data were gathered on socioeconomic factors and support networks. Results:

A total of 57.7% of the patients demonstrated high treatment adherence. Furthermore, 59.3% of the participants had access to a support network, and 24.6% exhibited suicidal ideation. A moderate positive correlation was found between adherence and the presence of support networks. Conclusions:The study reveals a lower adherence rate than generally reported in the existing literature, emphasizing the importance of context-specific intervention strategies. The presence of support networks emerges as a significant factor, aligning with previous studies on their impact on treatment adherence.
