Abstract

The rapid increase of kidney transplants worldwide has increased the possibility of encountering this complex population in hospital emergency departments. The degree of immunocompromise and the side effects of the medication required contribute to their atypical clinical and surgical presentation, and most of the times rapidly progressive.

Even though consultation with the transplant team is required, the viability of the graft and the patient's survival will depend on the promptness of the diagnosis and treatment provided by the emergency department physician. Additionally, an appropriate approach helps reduce risks and costs in the health system. This article discusses the management of transplant patients in the emergency department.
