Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association of insulin resistance and psoriasis according to its severity in patients attending the Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Hospital in the period March 2020 to September 2020.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional, exploratory, descriptive and correlational study was carried out in the area of Dermatology in patients with psoriasis who had the HOMA –IR index measured.
RESULTS: A statistically significant correlation was recorded between the HOMA-IR index and the variables weight, abdominal circumference, and (BMI) body mass index, reporting p values = 0,0003; 0,006 y 0,00001 respectively, while for the variable severity according to PASI, the correlation was not statistically significant (p = 0.70).
CONCLUSION: Patients with psoriasis and increased weight, abdominal circumference and BMI have a higher prevalence for the development of insulin resistance, the use of the HOMA-IR index represents a useful technique for the evaluation and follow-up of these patients. However, the severity of psoriasis was not an indicator of insulin resistance in this study, possibly a larger sample size is required.
